We cannot change the either, only know them more fully. 이 단편 소설에서 제일 울림이 큰 문장이라서 (그리고 소설의 핵심 주제이기도 하고) 여러번 곱씹어 읽었다. 정말 그렇다. 소설의 인물들처럼 시간 여행을 할 수 있더라도 과거를 바꿀 순 없지만 숨겨진 이야기들을 발견함으로써 온전히 이해할 순 있다. 얼마나 사실이며 근사한 이야기 주제인지. 나 역시 이런 경험을 종종 하지 않았던가.

"Nothing erases the past. There is repentance, there is atonement, and there is forgiveness. That is all, but that is enough."

그리고 소설의 마지막 문장. I agree. That is enough.

언제나 삶의 의미가 무엇인지 진지하게 탐색하는 작가 테드창의 최신작 Exhalation은 그의 다른 작품들처럼 통찰력있는 단편 소설이다. 예전에 블로그에 테드 창의 What's expected of us를 번역한 적이 있는데 그 때 에디님이 그 소설이 결정론적 세계관을 반영하는 것이 아니라 오히려 결정론적 세계관에 대한 비틀린 유머라고 하셨는데 그 소설에서 테드 창이 간접적으로 자신의 세계관을 피력했다면 Exhalation에서 그는 더 직접적으로 자신의 견해를 드러낸다:

Because even if a universe's lifespan is calculable, the variety of life that is generated within it is not. The buildings we have erected, the art and music and verse we have composed, the very lives we led: none of them could have been predicted, because none of them were inevitable.
...
Though I am long dead as you read this, I offer to you a valediction. Contemplate the marvel that is existence, and rejoice that you are able to do so. I feel I have the right to tell you this because, as I am inscribing these words, I am doing the same.
