조지 R.R. 마틴, 얼음과 불의 노래 - 왕들의 전쟁 (A song of ice and fire - A Clash of Kings) (1998)

1부보다 훨씬 속도감있게 진행된 2부 왕들의 전쟁은 확실히 더 재미있었다. 불길한 혜성이 하늘에 흔적을 남기고 그것을 본 이들이 각자 나름대로 그것을 해석하는 것으로 시작한 2부는 이 소설의 주인공들의 운명을 각기 다른 곳으로 이끌어간다.

Stark 가문의 사람들의 운명은 처참하기가 이루 말할 수 없어서 정녕 내가 이 소설을 계속 읽어야 하는가 회의를 안겨다 줄 정도였는데 Theon이 Winterfell을 점령했을 때도 충격적이었지만 Rodrik 경이 죽고 Winterfell이 Stark 가문의 가신격인 남자에게 떨어졌을 때는 정말 이 소설에서 그만 손 떼고 싶었다. 왜 Stark 가문 사람들은 맨날 배신당하고 나락으로 떨어져야 하나. 이 소설은 설마 Stark 가문이 어떻게 몰락해나가는지를 보여주고 싶은건가. 그런거라면 더 이상 읽을 용기가 나지 않잖아;;

이런 독자들의 마음을 헤아린건지(?) 2부는 Stark 가문의 운명을 희미하게 암시하면서 끝을 맺는다:

The stone is strong. Bran told himself, the roots of the trees go deep, and under the ground the Kings of Winter sit their thrones. So long as those remained, Winterfell remained. It was not dead, just broken. Like me, he thought. I'm not dead either.

Stark 가문의 시련이 여기서 끝날리 없다는 것을 암시하는 듯 하여 별로 위안이 되지는 않지만 이 소설이 보여주고 싶은 것이 이런 것이라면 끝까지 봐주어야 할 것만 같다. (3부를 읽을 때는 단단히 각오를 하고 읽어야 할 것 같다. Stark 가문에 Jon이랑 Bran만 살아남고 다 죽어도 놀라지 않을테다;;)

 
그리고 마음에 들어서 발췌한 Night's Watch의 서약의 말: 

Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the fire that burns against the cold, the light that brings the dawn, the horn that wakes the sleepers, the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night's Watch, for this night and all the nights to come.
